How can I establish Internet Connections with FRITZ!Box via a UMTS Mobile Network?

A USB modem for mobile broadband Internet access (UMTS / HSPA) allows newer models of the FRITZ!Box to establish internet connections via a mobile communication network. You can then use the functions of the FRITZ!Box even if no DSL extension is available.
NOTE:
Internet telephony as well as functions that require a public IP address (e.g. incoming VPN connections) are not or only partially available, depending on your mobile telephone network service provider.
Here we describe how you can connect the FRITZ!Box to a mobile communication modem and how to configure it for mobile broadband Internet access.

Preparations

Connecting the mobile modem to FRITZ!Box

  • Connect the USB mobile communication modem to the USB port of the FRITZ!Box.
    NOTE:
Some mobile communication modems can only be operated via an active USB hub when connected to the FRITZ!Box as their power consumption exceeds 500 mA as defined by the USB specifications.

Configuring FRITZ!Box for a mobile broadband Internet access

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface
  2. "Settings" > "Advanced Settings" > "Internet" > "Mobile Telephone Network"
  3. Check option "Enable Mobile Communication".
  4. Enter the PIN of the SIM card for the mobile communication modem.
    WARNING
If the PIN has been incorrectly entered three times, you will have to enter the PUK in order to unlock the SIM card again. Please consult your mobile telephone network service provider for further information on PIN or PUK.
  5. On the respective drop-down menu, select your mobile telephone network service provider. If not listed, select "Other operator".
  6. On selection of "Other operator", enter the APN access data that your mobile telephone network service provider has named.
    NOTE:
If you have selected a preconfigured mobile communication provider, the APN access data does not have to be changed.
  7. Save settings with "Apply".
